Borussia Dortmund mourn the passing of Branko Rasovic

The first foreign player in the history of Borussia Dortmund has passed away. We mourn the loss of Branko Rasovic, who died last Friday at the age of 82.

The football star, born on 11 April 1942 in Podgorica in the then Kingdom of Yugoslavia, won a national title with Partizan Belgrade in 1965 and played in the 1966 European Cup final, which ended in a 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid. Rasovic was the first foreign player to turn out for BVB.

The former football chairman Helmut "Jockel" Bracht, three-time German champion with Borussia, brought the 1.85-metre-tall Yugoslav national player to Dortmund in 1969 to take over from the legendary captain of the 1966 European Cup Winners' Cup-winning team, Wolfgang Paul. But the experienced defensive giant from the Balkans arrived at the club just as the successful side of 1966 was breaking up, with first striker Lothar Emmerich, then Sigi Held, Rudi Assauer and Reinhold Wosab all leaving.

After three years and 79 appearances in the Bundesliga, Rasovic was part of the team that was relegated to the Regionalliga West in 1972. He played 30 games in the lower-tier over the next two years, before ending his career with a 2-2 draw away to Westfalia Herne on 31 March 1974.
