Before the game, BVB were in third place with six points, just behind Schalke and FC Iserlohn, who each had seven points.

The Black & Yellows had their first chance in the 7th minute, after a cross from Ann-Sophie Vogel from the left side landed in a cluster of players in front of the Ibbenbüren goal. However, none of the Borussians were able to get to the ball ahead of the defenders to force it over the line. In the 13th minute, the home side took advantage of their first opportunity: After a through ball cut open the Dortmund defence, Kira Lake dinked the ball over Sandra Schröer and into the back of the net.

Sarah Giebels then had a similar opportunity down the other end just a minute later, but she was denied by the Ibbenbüren goalkeeper. In the 37th minute, it was another through-ball that opened up an opportunity, this time for Dortmund: Marie Grothe slipped in Marah Tayeh, who took the ball in her stride in the right-hand side of the box, skipped past one defender but was then crowded out just as she looked to shoot. So it was that the Black & Yellows went into the dressing room for half-time 1-0 down on the scoresheet.

After the change of ends, coach Thomas Sulewski's team came out of the blocks better and had significantly more possession than the hosts in the second half. In the 58th minute, captain Grothe finally grabbed the equaliser to bring the score to 1-1. After a quick throw-in, a mix-up between an Ibbenbüren defender and her goalkeeper allowed Grothe to snatch the ball and score from a tight angle.

With chances coming and going for both sides, it was Marjana Naceva who finally settled the game in Dortmund's favour. In the 84th minute, Hannah Geldschläger won a decisive header in midfield, putting the ball into the path of Mandy Reinhardt. Reinhardt moved the ball on to the onrushing Naceva, who was able to chip the ball over the goalkeeper into the back of the net. The team erupted in celebration for what would prove to be the match-winning goal.

"At half-time, we frankly discussed how we weren't playing the way we should be. We gave away the ball a lot. We weren't really winning the second balls or the challenges.

We did a lot better in the second half and, in my opinion, fully deserved to win in the end," said Sulewski in his post-match comments.

Next weekend, the BVB women will play at home against the second string of Arminia Bielefeld. He fielded the four players who had stayed in Dortmund (Felix Nmecha, Serhou Guirassy, Julian Brandt and Niklas Süle) in the starting line-up – and they all fulfilled the expectations that had been placed on their shoulders. In addition, he spread out the workload by making five changes to the starting XI compared to the final match before the international break in Bremen. "It was not a decision against Emre (editor's note: Can) or Sabi (Marcel Sabitzer)," declared the coach, who went on to explain: "We will have an extremely long season, hopefully, and we have an extremely small squad. It is therefore my obligation and my responsibility to ensure this mixture between mental and physical freshness."

The move completely paid off. Left-back Ramy Bensebaini had many good moments. Among other things, he initiated the goal for 1-0. Felix Nmecha stood out as a versatile player who was always available as a passing option in midfield. Donyell Malen and Karim Adeyemi beat the usually so solid 1. FC Heidenheim defence on several occasions and scored the first, second and third goals for a BVB team that performed strongly for long spells and above all in the first half. And then there was also the debut of Serhou Guirassy, who might have come away from his first game after a long injury lay-off "empty-handed" but still played a decisive role in the goal for 3-1. "A fantastic footballer," said Sahin, adding: "He gives our game a different dimension. He is not only a classic centre-forward, he is also a player who drops back and creates space for his team-mates. You don't see it all that often that a No. 9 allows the ball to run through for his team-mates on two occasions. I'm happy that he's here."

Overall, Sahin appeared satisfied with his team's performance. "We briefly held the door open and then closed it," he said in succinct fashion. He frequently greeted the attacking actions with applause from his coaching zone. But what is even more important to him: "What I judge the boys on is their work off the ball. We can only defend well if the lads press at the right moment." Even though goals were conceded for the first time in the early stages of this Bundesliga season, the team impressed with their tactical defending.

That will be put to the test once again in Bruges on Wednesday and in Stuttgart on Sunday. The international players, the pillars of the team, are not in Dortmund for almost two weeks. As a result, the preparations for the home game against 1.
