BVB complete new coaching team

Bundesliga football club Borussia Dortmund are reorganising their coaching team for the 2024/25 season. As of 1 July, the team head coach Nuri Sahin (35) will be completed by the assistant coaches Joao Tralhao (43), Ertugrul Arslan (44) and Lukasz Piszczek (39). Previous assistant coaches Sven Bender (35) and Sebastian Geppert (40) will depart on 30 June.

"In Joao, Ertugrul and Lukasz, we've managed to assemble a trio that brings a lot of expertise and good ideas to the table and will work well with Nuri. With their different strengths, we're convinced that they will help us to have a successful season," explained Lars Ricken, BVB's Managing Director for Sport.

"We quickly established a great bond of trust in our talks. In this constellation, the coaching team led by Nuri is in a very good position. Thanks to their various levels of experience in different areas, the three of them will help us to achieve our objectives," added sporting director Sebastian Kehl.

Up until the beginning of the year, Tralhao and Arslan worked at Turkish top-flight Antalyaspor as the assistants to then head coach Sahin, who subsequently moved to BVB. After making 382 competitive appearances (19 goals) and winning two German Championships (2011, 2012) and three DFB-Pokal titles (2012, 2017, 2021), Piszczek joined his hometown club LKS Goczalkowice-Zdroj as player-coach in July 2021.

Head coach Nuri Sahin said: "I would like to thank Sven and Sebastian for our collaboration. I'm now looking forward to the new team and the daily dialogue with three experts whom I value enormously in terms of their character and content. I have already worked with Joao and Ertugrul at Antalyaspor. And Lukasz was my first choice after it became clear that Sven would unfortunately be leaving BVB ahead of the new season. I have a special bond with him, I would've really liked to continue working with Sven."

Sven Bender and Sebastian Geppert will no longer form part of the coaching staff. Due to his private circumstances and his personal development as a coach, Bender will no longer be available to BVB in the new season. Sebastian Kehl declared: "A big thank-you to Sven and Sebastian for their enormous dedication, their identification and the great collaboration, which took us to the Champions League final last season."
