The facts on the quarter-final first leg in Barcelona

Borussia Dortmund will face FC Barcelona for the second time this season. After an unfortunate 3-2 loss in the league phase, they will now take on the Catalans in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League. The facts preview for the first leg at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys in Barcelona on Wednesday evening (kick-off 21:00 CEST, live on DAZN)

The scenario: The runner-up in the league phase versus the team in 10th. Barcelona have suffered only one defeat – 2-1 in Monaco in the opening game – and are unbeaten in nine games in the competition this season (eight wins and one draw). The leaders of Spain's La Liga beat Benfica 1-0 and 3-1 in the round of 16. After finishing in 10th position, Borussia Dortmund had to enter the play-offs (3-0 and 0-0 against Sporting Lisbon) before knocking out OSC Lille in the round of 16 thanks to a 0-0 draw (H) and a 2-1 victory (A).

Home/away: FC Barcelona have won only 10 and have lost six of their last 22 home games in European competition. But there have been four home victories this season, including by a 4-1 scoreline against FC Bayern, and only one draw (2-2 against Atalanta). On average, the team have scored more than three goals per match on home turf. Borussia Dortmund have won four of their six away games in the current Champions League campaign – in Bruges, in Zagreb and in Lisbon by 3-0 scorelines, in addition to the 2-1 win in Lille. The Black & Yellows also won in Newcastle (1-0), Milan (3-1) and Paris (1-0) last season, meaning that they actually have a positive record over their last 12 away games in the Champions League (seven victories, one draw and four defeats).

Barcelona facts: The five-time winners of the European Cup and the UEFA Champions League reached the round of 16 for the first time in three seasons in 2023/24. The most successful era in this competition came between 2007/08 and 2019/20, when the Catalan club always got to the quarter-finals at least. Barca have won a "major" UEFA competition on 14 occasions: the European Cup and Champions League five times, the European Cup Winners' Cup four times and the UEFA Cup five times. Robert Lewandowski has become only the third player to pass the 100-goal mark in the Champions League. Having previously won 14 of their 15 clashes against German visitors, there were three home defeats on the bounce against Bundesliga opponents before the 4-1 victory against Bayern. The Catalans have progressed in 13 of their 20 knockout ties against German clubs but have lost their last two, most recently against Eintracht Frankfurt in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League in 2021/22 (1-1 A, 2-3 H).

Borussia facts: BVB might have won only four of their last 17 clashes with clubs from La Liga (five draws and eight defeats), but they have been successful in seven of their 10 knockout ties, most recently against Atlético Madrid in the quarter-finals last season (2-1 loss away and 4-2 victory at home).

Head-to-head record: Following the 1997 European Super Cup (played in March and in January 1998 / 1-1 H, 0-2 A), the group games in the 2019/20 Champions League campaign (0-0 H, 1-3 A) and the 3-2 loss in this season's league phase, these will be Dortmund's sixth and seventh meetings with FC Barcelona.

Flashback: The 81,365 spectators at a sold-out SIGNAL IDUNA PARK saw BVB put up a great fight against the favourites on 11 December 2024, twice drawing level through Serhou Guirassy from the penalty spot in the 60th minute and then in the 78th minute, before ultimately falling to a 3-2 defeat. A goal from Raphinha (52) and a brace from substitute Ferran Torres (75/85) sealed the win for Barcelona. Based on the xG (2.73-2.04), BVB could have narrowly won.

Personnel matters: Hansi Flick replaced his former boss Niko Kovac as the FC Bayern Munich head coach on 3 November 2019 and led the team to the treble in his first season. Robert Lewandowski played for Borussia Dortmund from 2010 to 2014 and scored 103 goals in 187 appearances. Wojciech Szczesny and Emre Can played together at Juventus, as did Eric Garcia, Ferran Torres and Felix Nmecha at Manchester City, Ansu Fati and Pascal Groß at Brighton, and Pablo Torre and Yan Couto at Girona.

Champions League: Borussia Dortmund are taking part in the UEFA Champions League for the 19th time (only 09 clubs have participated more often), reaching the knockout round in 10 of their last 12 campaigns and the final on three occasions (winners in 1997, finalists in 2013 and 2024). FC Barcelona are the record participants: they are taking part in this competition for the 30th time, have been ever-presents since 2003 and have won it four times, most recently in 2015.
