Post-Match Report

Reactions: "Sometimes you have to suffer in order to learn"

Nuri Sahin, Sebastian Kehl, Waldemar Anton, Emre Can, Gregor Kobel and Julian Brandt spoke about the 4-2 victory against VfL Bochum. The match reactions.

Nuri Sahin (to DAZN): "I had the feeling that we had actually made a very good start to the game. Then a blow, the second goal, an unforced error. Residual defence is not when you have superiority in numbers at the back – if you don't close down, then you're in trouble. If we'd conceded a third goal, we would've had a huge problem. Sometimes you need to suffer in order to learn. We stayed clear and also deserved to win in the end. There are many topics that we need to work on. We want to develop, we want to stay clear, we want to create chances. The pace was enormously high. That was our seventh competitive game together. You learn a lot from these games. You can assume that we will and must address and tackle everything very clearly."

Sebastian Kehl (in the mixed zone): "It was very entertaining for the spectators because they saw six goals. I would have preferred to see them only on our side. We made life difficult for ourselves and had to chase the game. But we did that very well. The goal to make it 2-1 in the first half was super important. Before and after that, we created many chances for ourselves. I always had the feeling that we'd turn it around. There were many good things on show. What was also important is that the spectators were always there and did not leave the team hanging at any stage."

Emre Can (to DAZN): "We quickly found ourselves 2-0 down and then had last weekend's defeat in Stuttgart on our minds. Things didn't look good. But I already had the feeling early on that if we could score one before half-time, then we could turn it around. Everything is possible at this stadium, with these fans. But it cannot start with a 2-0 deficit. We need to be present from the first minute, and we need to learn that. That has happened too often in our last matches. Residual defence remains a big topic. It cannot be possible that someone goes clean through on our goal there. But we showed character. And we will improve!"

test

Waldemar Anton (in the mixed zone): "It had everything you want to see as a fan: excitement, many goals. It wasn't a good start for us of course. We didn't defend well for the goals we conceded. They scored two goals from a half-chance. We then showed spirit, had the game under control and performed dominantly. We had a lot of the ball from the beginning and also found good solutions. I had no doubt that we would manage it. We've picked up an important victory. Turning the game around like that after going 2-0 behind and playing with such conviction was a step in the right direction."

Gregor Kobel (in the mixed zone): "We showed a strong reaction and rewarded ourselves with three points. It is a goalkeeper's fate that if you make a mistake, then it always looks sh... The problem was that I wanted to help Nico so we could switch the play. In a moment like that, I have to play it safe as a goalkeeper and kick the ball away wherever I can."

test

Julian Brandt (in the mixed zone): "We lacked consistency with our finishing in the first half. When you have the feeling that you're superior on the pitch, you're always playing with fire. One or two counters can put you in a bad situation. Nonetheless, it was an important win. Four goals, three points – very important." (br)
