Borussia Dortmund commits to Science Based Targets Initiative

Responsible energy use and commitment to climate protection are fundamental principles at BVB. On its path towards long-term and continuous reduction of its CO2 footprint, Borussia Dortmund is taking another important step by becoming the first Bundesliga football team to have its ambitious CO2 emission reduction goals validated by the internationally recognised Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTI) in accordance with the Paris climate agreement. This agreement aims above all to limit the rise in the global average temperature to 1.5 degrees celsius.

The independent initiative by the WWF, UN Global Compact, the World Resources Institute, and the CDP will check the goals submitted by BVB according to current, scientifically based requirements and criteria.

As an actor with wide-reaching influence, Borussia Dortmund wants to have a substantial and positive influence on the environment and on others within the framework of its sustainability strategy. With regards to the environment, the focus is on three key goals, which are supported by concrete milestones, activities and measures:

  • achieve climate neutrality
  • improve water efficiency
  • stimulate circular economy
