Sahin: "We want to have the ball and play football"

Borussia Dortmund are set to play their 305th game in a European cup competition on Wednesday (21:00 CET / live on DAZN). The match away to Dinamo Zagreb will be a first. There has never before been a meeting with an opponent from Croatia.

Upon landing, the team and coaches immediately headed to the Maksimir Stadium in the north-east of the city, which has 750,000 inhabitants. Only 24,851 of the 35,123 seats are currently in use, but BVB coach Nuri Sahin knows from personal experience that – despite the lack of roofs and despite the running track – the atmosphere in the three stands will be heated.

"But I don't think that will shock the boys. Our players are active at the very highest level, they have seen and experienced a lot," said Sahin. And there is a special atmosphere in Dortmund too. "It doesn't really matter what happens in the stands. The lads like that." Sahin sees the topic of spectators "more as a positive". What is even more important is the condition of the pitch, which both Sahin and Felix Nmecha – who was also present at the press conference – described as good.

What is also positive is the personnel situation. Niklas Süle and Karim Adeyemi stayed behind in Dortmund (and are continuing to work on their return to the team at home), but Emre Can and Serhou Guirassy have travelled. "Emre wasn't able to join in everything today. Serhou looks good, he trained well," said Sahin of the morning training session, which took place in Dortmund prior to departure. "Both are options for tomorrow."

Lots of talk at the press conference was about Felix Nmecha and his positive development, as well as the system. "Our basic formation is a 4-3-3," said Sahin, who reserves the right to be flexible but wants to stick to one thing: "We don't want to depart from our philosophy; we want to have the ball and play football." Nmecha said: "I really like it in this position. I get the ball a lot, can have a big impact and work a lot for the team, off the ball too. I hope that I can continue to develop, also defensively."

There is no doubt that Borussia's defence will be challenged on Wednesday evening. And Dinamo's 9-2 defeat away to Bayern is not even on the Black & Yellows' radar. Because it was followed by a change of coach – and two away wins and a home draw in the UEFA Champions League. Sahin commented: "We have seen very many Dinamo matches. They have picked up a remarkable seven points. You can see the handwriting. It's a team moulded by the coach. Several good players, several names. But we're prepared.“
