"I'm happy to be able to make decisions again" – Personnel situation improves ahead of Freiburg

Borussia Dortmund are about to play a home game in the 15:30 CET slot on a Saturday for the first time this season. SC Freiburg will be the visitors to SIGNAL IDUNA PARK on Bundesliga Matchday 11 (live on Sky). Prior to the meeting with the Breisgau outfit, coach Nuri Sahin shared some positive personnel news at the press conference.

In the weeks leading up to the international break, Sahin frequently needed a sheet of paper listing the injured players so as not to forget anyone. But around two weeks after the Black & Yellows' last competitive game, the personnel situation has improved considerably. "For the first time in a long time, I have more positive personnel news than negative. I'm very happy to be able to make decisions again. Beforehand, I had to count to 11 and then line them up," the coach said on Thursday. Both Gio Reyna and Julien Duranville as well as Waldemar Anton and Jamie Gittens are back. "I don't expect Gio and Juju to be at 100% immediately. But if they are in the squad, then they are ready to play," Sahin said. Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel has already returned to action between the posts for Switzerland. Karim Adeyemi, Niklas Süle and Kjell Wätjen have also made progress and are already training on the pitch again, but won't be ready in time for the weekend. Captain Emre Can will miss out due to the red card he picked up in the match against Mainz.

With the coach having opted to give the internationals time off, the team will only come together again for the first time to prepare for the Freiburg game on Thursday. "That's when we'll also lay out a strategy – for the game against Freiburg first of all, but also where we want to get to by the winter break, both in terms of points and performances," explained Sahin, whose team is about to embark upon the final set of competitive games of the year with seven matches in the Bundesliga and UEFA Champions League.

Freiburg's visit to Dortmund will mark the start of that run. BVB have won all of their matches at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK this season – five of which have been in the Bundesliga – and occupy first place in the home table. The Black & Yellows want to continue their streak against the Breisgau outfit. "I'm a fan of the way in which Freiburg play and the way this club has managed to stabilise itself for years. And Julian (editor's note: Schuster) is doing really well," said Sahin of the opposition and their new coach. "He has already known the club for a long time, inherited a lot from Christian Streich and has then brought in his own things too. It is a team that does everything for each other on the pitch. The table also shows that they're doing really good work."

Freiburg sit fifth in the table

Freiburg currently have one more point on the board than BVB and occupy fifth position in the table. The Breisgau outfit have won five and lost three of their 10 matches to date. Prior to the international break, Freiburg played out two goalless draws – at home to Mainz and away to Union Berlin.

BVB's head-to-head record against Freiburg is positive: the Black & Yellows have won the last five meetings, including their most recent home game against the men from the Breisgau by a 3-0 scoreline. BVB last suffered a home defeat at the hands of Freiburg 23 years ago.
