DFB decision: two-game suspension for Can

Borussia Dortmund captain Emre Can has been suspended for two matches by the DFB sports tribunal following his red card for a foul in the match against 1. FSV Mainz 05. The 30-year-old will therefore be unavailable for BVB's upcoming home game against SC Freiburg (Saturday 23 November, 15:30 CET) and the subsequent clash with Bayern Munich (Saturday 30 November, 18:30 CET).

In the 3-1 away defeat last Saturday, Can was sent off with a red card in the 27th minute by referee Florian Badstübner after a foul on Mainz midfielder Lee Jae-sung.

The verdict in full: "The Sporting Tribunal of the German Football Association (DFB) has imposed a ban of two games in the professional leagues on Emre Can of Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund in a single judgement after the DFB Control Committee brought charges of rough play against an opponent. In addition, the player is also banned from all other competitive matches of his club until the ban expires."

"I'm very proud that we've remained unbeaten with this young team in three away games in the Youth League. Especially in a game like this, where it's less about football and more about fight and mentality, they showed heart," praised head coach Mike Tullberg. The deep, uneven surface of the Ivan Laljak-Ivic stadium in Zapresic, just outside Zagreb, made it more or less impossible to put together good combination play.<\/p>\nBVB, who usually pride themselves on their technical quality and crisp passing, struggled to cope with these conditions for a long time. The game was tough and characterised by many errors. "Because we knew that the pitch wasn't really playable, our approach wasn't what you'd expect from us. We tried to play simple football and more long balls," explained Tullberg.<\/p>\nWithout the suspended Ousmane Diallo and the injured Jonas Feddersen and Diego Ngambi - but with the young pros Almugera Kabar and Cole Campbell on board in the first 45 minutes - the Black & Yellows only started to make their mark going forward in the closing stages of the first half. Thierry Fidjeu-Tazemeta twice failed to beat the alert Antonio Rajic in the Zagreb goal. Up to that point, chance had mostly reigned supreme as the slippery pitch hindered any kind of structured passing game. The home side also seldom put together any decent sequences of play and didn't have their first sight of goal until the 45th minute, when Tomas Bakovic had a chance to shoot from ten metres out but missed the target.<\/p>\nAlex Niziolek can't convert the big chance<\/b><\/p>\nThe second half was much more eventful. U17 players Mathis Albert and Luca Reggiani replaced Cole Campbell and Almugera Kabar, who were in the first-team squad in the evening. Albert made a promising start with two strong individual efforts, but the player of the match was goalkeeper Robin Lisewski, who reacted sensationally on several occasions, gritted his teeth after a thigh injury and proved himself as a rock of stability for BVB. His save to deny Mislav Cutuk's header from point-blank range in the 54th minute was truly outstanding.<\/p>\nBut the players in front of him also defended to the point of exhaustion against the now much more aggressive hosts. Nick Cherny cleared the ball off the line with his head after a Dinamo corner (69), while his colleagues courageously threw themselves in the way of every ball. "Tyler Meiser saved everything and Robin Lisewski shouldered big responsibility, especially as the only two U19 players in the squad," said Mike Tullberg in praise of his defensive leader and captain. <\/p>\nHowever, one of the few BVB counter-attacks gave substitute Alex Niziolek the best chance to decide the game. The substitute striker failed to connect cleanly with the ball from point-blank range after Luca Reggiani's assist and shot high over the crossbar (82). But a win would have perhaps been undeserved. "It had little to do with football overall," said Mike Tullberg, summarising the match.<\/p>\nBVB are in 16th place with eight points after five matchdays. A draw in their final game against Barcelona would secure them a place in the knockout round. The boys from Barcelona's world-famous youth academy La Masia have celebrated four wins so far and are top of the table with twelve points. The U19s continue their DFB Youth League campaign on Sunday.
