Times Square Cup 2024: Black & Yellow football in New York
"It was incredible to see the passion and dedication of all the players and fans today. Borussia Dortmund are proud to support Street Soccer USA and help grow the game here in the United States. Our collective impact will extend far beyond the pitch," said Marc Lingenhoff, managing director of BVB Americas.
BVB brand ambassador Patrick Owomoyela was also on hand to support the event, which drew fans and spectators from all five New York City boroughs and even Philadelphia. Particularly impressive was the Youth Cup competition, in which some 350 boys and girls aged 10 to 18 played in this unique environment. Patrick Owomoyela presented the trophies to the winners in the six age categories.
Lawrence Cann, president and CEO of Street Soccer USA, emphasised the importance of the event: "The Times Square Cup is not just a football tournament, it is a celebration of community, resilience and the power of sport for social change. We are proud of the work we are doing with Borussia Dortmund – together we can create opportunities for everyone, regardless of their background."
In addition to the sporting competition, the focus was also on social engagement: the proceeds of the event will go to Street Soccer USA's advocacy programmes, which help disadvantaged young people and adults in the United States gain a foothold in employment, education and housing. The event reached over 25 million viewers worldwide. More photos and videos of the event can be found on the BVB Instagram channel @blackyellow, among others.
