Thanks to a dream goal by Foti, the Black & Yellows succeeded in beating then leaders Dynamo Dresden by a 2-1 scoreline. Viktoria Köln had been in extremely strong home form recently. The team coached by ex-pro Olaf Janßen had won each of their last three home matches and thus laid the foundations for their successful season to date. BVB had fared modestly on their travels. Their record prior to the away game in Cologne: one point.<\/p>\nPersonnel matters:<\/b> Coach Jan Zimmermann made two changes to the starting XI compared to the 2-1 victory against Dresden, with Nicklas Jessen taking over the right-back role from Patrick Göbel. Another player returning to the team was captain Ayman Azhil. The Black & Yellows were still without the three injury absentees Prince Aning, Felix Irorere and Paul-Philipp Besong.<\/p>\nThe match & analysis: <\/b>BVB clearly had big ambitions and were on red alert from the kick-off. Barely three minutes had been played when the Black & Yellows at Stadion Höhenberg were celebrating for the first time. After a possession turnover deep in their own half, Dortmund switched the play quickly only for Köln defender Enrique Lofolomo to stop Julian Hettwer at the last moment. The home team failed to clear the ensuing corner, which permitted David Lelle to deliver the ball into the middle once again. Franz Roggow rose the highest on the edge of the six-yard box and headed into the left corner (3).<\/p>\nThe early lead played into the hands of the Black & Yellows, who waited for opportunities to switch the play. Köln subsequently had much more of the game and created their first opportunities but lacked precision with their finishing. Dortmund were significantly more efficient, especially in terms of chance conversion. Antonio Foti upped the lead to 2-0 with their second shot. The midfielder rounded off some lovely build-up play by Julian Hettwer (17).<\/p>\nThe visitors did not appear to be particularly perturbed. Saif El Mala promptly responded by firing the ball over BVB goalkeeper Marcel Lotka's goal from a tight angle (19). A controversial incident ultimately led to a goal being pulled back. After a supposed foul on Lofolomo, who was presumably caught by Azhil in the melee, referee Mario Hildenbrand pointed to the spot. Lex-Tyger Lobinger assumed the responsibility and fired an unstoppable shot into the bottom left corner (25). Only seconds after making it 2-1, the attacker missed the chance to bag a brace when he failed to connect properly with the ball from a promising position.<\/p>\n<img src=\"/content/dam/bvbweb/en/news/u23/2024/10/19/spielbericht-k-ln/U23-Koeln-3.jpg\" data-assetref=\"U23-Koeln-3-1729349626801\"><\/p>\nThe action on the pitch subsequently calmed down somewhat. Köln did repeatedly make an impact in front of the 3,957 spectators but lacked purpose. The Borussia players were then hit with a double-blow shortly before the interval: El Mala was caught lightly by BVB defender Yannik Lührs in the penalty area, which the referee responded to by once again awarding a penalty. Albion Vrenezi stepped up in place of Lobinger on this occasion and confidently converted to make it 2-2 (42). El Mala was again in the thick of the action two minutes after the equaliser. The attacking player used borderline physical force to get the better of Lührs down the left flank, cut inside and played the ball towards Lobinger, who simply had to get his foot to it at the back post.<\/p>\nThe game remained extremely entertaining after the break. With the lead in the bag, Köln upped the tempo and pressure. The hosts first squandered a double opportunity to score their fourth goal (48), then Lotka made a save to keep out a long-range effort from Bryan Henning (50).<\/p>\nIt was amid this spell of pressure from the hosts that the next goal was scored at the other end. It was Dortmund's turn to be awarded a penalty kick in the 54th minute, which captain Azhil slotted home to make it 3-3. Julian Hettwer had previously been fouled in the penalty area.<\/p>\nIn Rodney Elongo-Yombo and Babis Drakas, BVB coach Zimmermann brought on two pairs of fresh legs for the closing stages \u2013 and it almost paid off immediately. Only a matter of minutes after his substitution, Elongo-Yombo pulled the trigger from around 20 metres. But the ball flew narrowly wide of the left upright (74).<\/p>\n<img src=\"/content/dam/bvbweb/en/news/u23/2024/10/19/spielbericht-k-ln/U23-Koeln-1.jpg\" data-assetref=\"U23-Koeln-1-1729349644892\"><\/p>\nBut Eberwein went one better \u2013 and in style. While falling backwards, the 28-year-old headed a Drakas cross into the corner with great technical skill to make it 4-3 (83). And it was to get even more bitter for Köln, who had defender Christoph Greger sent off for a professional foul on the lively Elongo-Yombo. Now a man up, Dortmund managed to score another goal. Drakas prodded a cross from Elongo-Yombo over the line in stoppage time and sealed the first away victory of the current campaign in the process.<\/p>\nCoach Jan Zimmermann:<\/b> "We made a good start and quickly went 2-0 up but then we didn't quite do enough for the match. I have a young team, who were then of course very frustrated with the game in the changing room. Thanks to a dream goal by Foti, the Black & Yellows succeeded in beating then leaders Dynamo Dresden by a 2-1 scoreline. Viktoria Köln had been in extremely strong home form recently. The team coached by ex-pro Olaf Janßen had won each of their last three home matches and thus laid the foundations for their successful season to date. BVB had fared modestly on their travels. Their record prior to the away game in Cologne: one point.<\/p>\nPersonnel matters:<\/b> Coach Jan Zimmermann made two changes to the starting XI compared to the 2-1 victory against Dresden, with Nicklas Jessen taking over the right-back role from Patrick Göbel. Another player returning to the team was captain Ayman Azhil. The Black & Yellows were still without the three injury absentees Prince Aning, Felix Irorere and Paul-Philipp Besong.<\/p>\nThe match & analysis: <\/b>BVB clearly had big ambitions and were on red alert from the kick-off. Barely three minutes had been played when the Black & Yellows at Stadion Höhenberg were celebrating for the first time. After a possession turnover deep in their own half, Dortmund switched the play quickly only for Köln defender Enrique Lofolomo to stop Julian Hettwer at the last moment. The home team failed to clear the ensuing corner, which permitted David Lelle to deliver the ball into the middle once again. Franz Roggow rose the highest on the edge of the six-yard box and headed into the left corner (3).<\/p>\nThe early lead played into the hands of the Black & Yellows, who waited for opportunities to switch the play. Köln subsequently had much more of the game and created their first opportunities but lacked precision with their finishing. Dortmund were significantly more efficient, especially in terms of chance conversion. Antonio Foti upped the lead to 2-0 with their second shot. The midfielder rounded off some lovely build-up play by Julian Hettwer (17).<\/p>\nThe visitors did not appear to be particularly perturbed. Saif El Mala promptly responded by firing the ball over BVB goalkeeper Marcel Lotka's goal from a tight angle (19). A controversial incident ultimately led to a goal being pulled back. After a supposed foul on Lofolomo, who was presumably caught by Azhil in the melee, referee Mario Hildenbrand pointed to the spot. Lex-Tyger Lobinger assumed the responsibility and fired an unstoppable shot into the bottom left corner (25). Only seconds after making it 2-1, the attacker missed the chance to bag a brace when he failed to connect properly with the ball from a promising position.<\/p>\n<img src=\"/content/dam/bvbweb/en/news/u23/2024/10/19/spielbericht-k-ln/U23-Koeln-3.jpg\" data-assetref=\"U23-Koeln-3-1729349626801\"><\/p>\nThe action on the pitch subsequently calmed down somewhat. Köln did repeatedly make an impact in front of the 3,957 spectators but lacked purpose. The Borussia players were then hit with a double-blow shortly before the interval: El Mala was caught lightly by BVB defender Yannik Lührs in the penalty area, which the referee responded to by once again awarding a penalty. Albion Vrenezi stepped up in place of Lobinger on this occasion and confidently converted to make it 2-2 (42). El Mala was again in the thick of the action two minutes after the equaliser. The attacking player used borderline physical force to get the better of Lührs down the left flank, cut inside and played the ball towards Lobinger, who simply had to get his foot to it at the back post.<\/p>\nThe game remained extremely entertaining after the break. With the lead in the bag, Köln upped the tempo and pressure. The hosts first squandered a double opportunity to score their fourth goal (48), then Lotka made a save to keep out a long-range effort from Bryan Henning (50).<\/p>\nIt was amid this spell of pressure from the hosts that the next goal was scored at the other end. It was Dortmund's turn to be awarded a penalty kick in the 54th minute, which captain Azhil slotted home to make it 3-3. Julian Hettwer had previously been fouled in the penalty area.<\/p>\nIn Rodney Elongo-Yombo and Babis Drakas, BVB coach Zimmermann brought on two pairs of fresh legs for the closing stages \u2013 and it almost paid off immediately. Only a matter of minutes after his substitution, Elongo-Yombo pulled the trigger from around 20 metres. And it was to get even more bitter for Köln, who had defender Christoph Greger sent off for a professional foul on the lively Elongo-Yombo. Now a man up, Dortmund managed to score another goal.
