However, the U23s were not able to cause many problems in the opposition's penalty area, often giving the ball away too easily in Aue's half. The home side were also struggling to put much together offensively in the opening stages. In the first quarter of an hour, it was only a deflected Anthony Barylla shot that caused any slight danger in the 11th minute, when BVB goalkeeper Silas Ostrzinski took safe option and tipped the ball over the bar. Six minutes later, the hosts countered in their own stadium. After Michael Eberwein lost the ball, things suddenly went very fast: Omar Sijaric teed up Ali Loune, who took aim from the inside-right. Ostrzinski was only able to turn the ball on to the post. The ball rebounded and rolled along the goal line, where Borys Tashchy was waiting to poke the ball into the back of the net.<\/p>\n<p>The setback caused the Dortmund game to fall apart. The otherwise stable defence suddenly began to wobble. Within a few minutes, the violets came very close to scoring a second goal. Ostrzinski made two saves in the 19th and 22nd minutes, before Tashchy's header went just wide of the post five minutes later.<\/p>\n<p>The equaliser then came out of nowhere. This time it was the Dortmund team who hit their opponents quickly on transition after winning the ball, with Kjell Wätjen, Julian Hettwer and Paul-Philipp Besong linking up to outfox the FC Erzgebirge back line. The crowning glory of the fine move was Besong's finish to make it 1-1, beating Aue goalkeeper Martin Männel from 14 metres out from the inside right.<\/p>\n<p>The equaliser restored BVB's confidence. Zimmermann team's enjoyed more possession of the ball in the final phase of the first half, but again struggled to carve out scoring opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Dortmund side did not allow themselves to be discouraged. Right at the beginning of the second half, Wätjen tried his luck from distance. However, the warning shot was not a problem for Männel in the 46th minute. It wasn't long afterwards that BVB conceded a second goal: Mika Clausen fired the ball into the left corner with his right foot from around 16 metres out to make it 2-1 to Aue on 54 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>In front of 10,495 fans in the Erzgebirgsstadion, BVB refused to lie down and threw everything at their hosts in spite of the setback. Hettwer went agonisingly close to another equaliser. After a lovely pass from Eberwein, the striker found himself free in front of Männel, but the BVB top scorer's lobbed effort narrowly missed the goal in the 64th minute.<\/p>\n<p>Zimmermann tried everything he could, bringing on three fresh faces in attack in Antonio Foti, Babis Drakas and Rodney Elongo-Yombo, but again BVB failed to find a way through the resolute Aue defence who did not offer them any gaps or space to exploit.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the U23s missed the chance to further ease any lingering worries in the fight against relegation. Gladbach had gone five away games unbeaten, picking up an impressive 13 points in the process, while Dortmund had won their past ten home games (11 including the DFB-Pokal) against the other Borussia.<br>\n<\/p>\n<p><b>Personnel matters:&nbsp;<br>\n<\/b>Coach Niko Kovac put his trust in the team that had celebrated a 3-1 victory over Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday. Team captain Emre Can and midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka were available again, but were initially on the bench. Gladbach countered Dortmund's 3-4-2-1 with a 4-2-3-1, with a high press against the ball in defence. Cvancara was tasked with man-marking Adeyemi.<br>\n<\/p>\n<p><b>The match &amp; analysis:<br>\n<\/b>It was an intense, hard-fought match with plenty of no-nonsense tackles. The first booking of the game arrived in the fourth minute, with Scally yellow-carded for a foul on Adeyemi, who looked set to launch a dangerous counter-attack. BVB had another chance to counter nine minutes later: Adeyemi powered forward with a three-on-three, but held the ball too long and was dispossessed. There was little structure to the Black &amp; Yellows' play and it was not until the 19th minute that they had their first chance: Gross drilled in a low cross from the right flank onto the feet of Adeyemi, who fired wide of the left-hand post from 11 metres out. Gladbach proved more clinical in front of goal, opening the scoring with their first chance of the game. Itakura received the ball near the centre circle and embarked on a run forward. He tried to play a one-two with Stöger, who was lurking on the edge of the penalty area, but Bensebaini intervened. Unfortunately for the BVB defender, he deflected the ball perfectly into the path of Itakura, who found himself one-on-one with Kobel and made no mistake with the finish to open the scoring in the 19th minute.<b><br>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img src=\"/content/dam/bvbweb/en/news/profis/2025/04/20/bl-spielbericht/56-BVB-Gladbach-Beier.jpg\" data-assetref=\"56-BVB-Gladbach-Beier-1745166741586\"><\/p>\n<p>Borussia Dortmund were then forced to make an early substitution. After just over half an hour, Beier, who had previously been cleared out by Weigl, was unable to continue. He was replaced by Chukwuemeka (34). Gladbach celebrated their second goal shortly afterwards through Ullrich, but Elvedi was offside in the build-up and had also fouled Svensson (39). Instead of 2-0, it was 1-1 two minutes later: Chukwuemeka won the ball in a half-right position near the penalty area and slipped a pass outside to Gross on the right. He picked out Guirassy with a low cross, and the in-form striker finished calmly first-time from the penalty spot (41).<\/p>\n<p>The Black &amp; Yellows now seemed to have gained a little more confidence in their own actions and took the lead with their next effort, only their fourth of the match. Chukwuemeka won the ball in midfield again and played it to Gross, who slipped it forward to Couto on the right wing. The Brazilian played another low cross, which took a touch off Adeyemi and bounced back to the edge of the box, where Nmecha was running into space and hit a low shot in his stride which buried itself in the bottom-left corner (44). But that was not the end of a furious final phase of the first half. There were four minutes of added time. Stöger made a mistake with seconds remaining. Chukwuemeka broke through down the right, fed it inside to Guirassy, whose shot from ten metres was brilliantly saved by Omlin, but the rebound was headed over the helpless Gladbach keeper by Svensson to make it 3-1 (45+4).<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"/content/dam/bvbweb/en/news/profis/2025/04/20/bl-spielbericht/56-BVB-Gladbach-Guirassy.jpg\" data-assetref=\"56-BVB-Gladbach-Guirassy-1745166754791\"><\/p>\n<p>The second half began with a great counter-attacking opportunity for the Black &amp; Yellows through Adeyemi, who would probably have been better off trying to finish himself instead of passing to Guirassy. A Gladbach defender was able to intervene to send the ball out for a corner (46). Down the other end, the video assistant intervened to award a penalty. Nmecha is said to have hit Kleindienst (who had hardly complained) on the foot, referee Siebert looked at the scene on the monitor and pointed to the spot. Stöger duly stepped up to reduce the deficit to a single goal at 3-2 (56).<\/p>\n<p>The goal had an immediate effect. BVB no longer had the same courage going forward, instead looking to keep their opponents at bay. Gladbach made offensive changes, bringing on a second striker in Fukuda. Kovac had already brought on five fresh sets of legs to bring the narrow lead over the finish line. The fans supported the team every step of the way. Carney Chukwuemeka then came on for the injured Maxi Beier and turned the game around. Between the 41st minute and the half-time whistle, BVB celebrated three goals in quick succession: first Serhou Guirassy made it 1-1, then Felix Nmecha made it 2-1 and Daniel Svensson made it 3-1. But the game remained tense after Stöger reduced the deficit to 3-2 with a penalty ten minutes after the restart.<\/p>\n<p><b>The scenario:<\/b>&nbsp;&nbsp;<br>\nNinth versus eighth on Easter Sunday. Gladbach had gone five away games unbeaten, picking up an impressive 13 points in the process, while Dortmund had won their past ten home games (11 including the DFB-Pokal) against the other Borussia.<br>\n<\/p>\n<p><b>Personnel matters:&nbsp;<br>\n<\/b>Coach Niko Kovac put his trust in the team that had celebrated a 3-1 victory over Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday. Team captain Emre Can and midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka were available again, but were initially on the bench. Marcel Sabitzer and the injured Nico Schlotterbeck were absent.<b><br>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img src=\"/content/dam/bvbweb/en/news/profis/2025/04/20/bl-spielbericht/56-BVB-Gladbach-Anton.jpg\" data-assetref=\"56-BVB-Gladbach-Anton-1745166722020\"><\/p>\n<p><b>Tactics:&nbsp;<br>\n<\/b>BVB not only started the game with the same personnel as on Tuesday, but also with the same formation. Beier and Adeyemi played in attacking midfield behind Guirassy. Couto pushed forward when in possession, as did Svensson, who moved inwards from the flank. Gladbach countered Dortmund's 3-4-2-1 with a 4-2-3-1, with a high press against the ball in defence. Cvancara was tasked with man-marking Adeyemi.<br>\n<\/p>\n<p><b>The match &amp; analysis:<br>\n<\/b>It was an intense, hard-fought match with plenty of no-nonsense tackles. The first booking of the game arrived in the fourth minute, with Scally yellow-carded for a foul on Adeyemi, who looked set to launch a dangerous counter-attack. BVB had another chance to counter nine minutes later: Adeyemi powered forward with a three-on-three, but held the ball too long and was dispossessed. There was little structure to the Black &amp; Yellows' play and it was not until the 19th minute that they had their first chance: Gross drilled in a low cross from the right flank onto the feet of Adeyemi, who fired wide of the left-hand post from 11 metres out. Gladbach proved more clinical in front of goal, opening the scoring with their first chance of the game. Itakura received the ball near the centre circle and embarked on a run forward. He tried to play a one-two with Stöger, who was lurking on the edge of the penalty area, but Bensebaini intervened. Unfortunately for the BVB defender, he deflected the ball perfectly into the path of Itakura, who found himself one-on-one with Kobel and made no mistake with the finish to open the scoring in the 19th minute.<b><br>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img src=\"/content/dam/bvbweb/en/news/profis/2025/04/20/bl-spielbericht/56-BVB-Gladbach-Beier.jpg\" data-assetref=\"56-BVB-Gladbach-Beier-1745166741586\"><\/p>\n<p>Borussia Dortmund were then forced to make an early substitution. After just over half an hour, Beier, who had previously been cleared out by Weigl, was unable to continue. He was replaced by Chukwuemeka (34). Gladbach celebrated their second goal shortly afterwards through Ullrich, but Elvedi was offside in the build-up and had also fouled Svensson (39). Instead of 2-0, it was 1-1 two minutes later: Chukwuemeka won the ball in a half-right position near the penalty area and slipped a pass outside to Gross on the right. He picked out Guirassy with a low cross, and the in-form striker finished calmly first-time from the penalty spot (41).<\/p>\n<p>The Black &amp; Yellows now seemed to have gained a little more confidence in their own actions and took the lead with their next effort, only their fourth of the match. Chukwuemeka won the ball in midfield again and played it to Gross, who slipped it forward to Couto on the right wing. The Brazilian played another low cross, which took a touch off Adeyemi and bounced back to the edge of the box, where Nmecha was running into space and hit a low shot in his stride which buried itself in the bottom-left corner (44). But that was not the end of a furious final phase of the first half. There were four minutes of added time. Stöger made a mistake with seconds remaining. Chukwuemeka broke through down the right, fed it inside to Guirassy, whose shot from ten metres was brilliantly saved by Omlin, but the rebound was headed over the helpless Gladbach keeper by Svensson to make it 3-1 (45+4).<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"/content/dam/bvbweb/en/news/profis/2025/04/20/bl-spielbericht/56-BVB-Gladbach-Guirassy.jpg\" data-assetref=\"56-BVB-Gladbach-Guirassy-1745166754791\"><\/p>\n<p>The second half began with a great counter-attacking opportunity for the Black &amp; Yellows through Adeyemi, who would probably have been better off trying to finish himself instead of passing to Guirassy. A Gladbach defender was able to intervene to send the ball out for a corner (46). Down the other end, the video assistant intervened to award a penalty. Nmecha is said to have hit Kleindienst (who had hardly complained) on the foot, referee Siebert looked at the scene on the monitor and pointed to the spot. Stöger duly stepped up to reduce the deficit to a single goal at 3-2 (56).<\/p>\n<p>The goal had an immediate effect. BVB no longer had the same courage going forward, instead looking to keep their opponents at bay. Gladbach made offensive changes, bringing on a second striker in Fukuda. Kovac had already brought on five fresh sets of legs to bring the narrow lead over the finish line. The fans supported the team every step of the way.
