Under-19s lose last main round game in Unterhaching

The Borussia Dortmund Under-19s lost their last game in main round group D of the DFB Nachwuchsliga 0-3 to SpVgg Unterhaching, meaning they have missed out on the chance to secure a home advantage in the round of sixteen in the final round of the German Championship. The Under-17s are still second in the table in main round group A, despite a 1-2 defeat at home against Borussia Mönchengladbach.

The Under-19s' 5-1 gala against Mainz was followed by defeat on the challenging pitch at the Sportschule Oberhaching. "The opposition tried to provoke us, and we fell for it and caved," said Mike Tullberg. This was exacerbated by his team's flawed performance.

Careless dribbling in their own box led to a penalty, from which Samuel Weiss scored in the 11th minute, making the score 1-0. Unterhaching's second goal was the result of a similar situation (Jackson Eckl, 17). Shortly before the final whistle, Cornelius Pfeiffer perfected the final score. As in their first game against Unterhaching (0-2), the Black&Yellows drew the short straw when it came to one-on-one tackles and almost every aerial battle against a team that were physically significantly stronger. "As well as the basic disciplines, we were also lacking resistance," Mike Tullberg summarised. BVB will finish third in the group D table behind Karlsruher SC and Rasenballsport Leipzig.

In the round of sixteen in the final round of the German Championship (26/27 April), BVB will be playing away to VfL Bochum, who finished second in the group C table behind Bayer Leverkusen and recently beat FC Schalke 04 5-0 in the Westfalenpokal. Tullberg commented: "We are massive outsiders in this game."

Under-19s: Lisewski – Rashidi (Meiser, 56), Adamczyk (Blaszczyk, 76), Reggiani (Mahjoubi, 56), Degener (Inacio, 45) – Cherny, Kaba, Etcibasi – Albert, Kegni (Cena, 45), Diallo

Under-17s in second place despite 1-2 result in top level game

Despite losing their top level game against Borussia Mönchengladbach 1-2, the Under-17s still have a chance to secure a home advantage in the first game of the final round of the German Championship if they can win their last group stage game against 1. FC Magdeburg (26.4). This was made possible by VfL Wolfsburg's unexpected 1-2 defeat to Magdeburg.

The Black&Yellows got off to a perfect start in the "Borussia duel". Diego Branco crowned their first attack with an impressive goal to take them into the lead. However, after the starting phase, sloppiness started to creep in in their defence, which the visiting team ruthlessly exploited. Niko Horvat equalised following a counter-attack in the seventh minute, and Jakub Perat made Dortmund pay for an individual defending error with another goal, making the score 1-2 (41).

BVB had plenty of chances to turn the top quality game around. Coach Karsten Gorges had exhausted all of his options in terms of personnel to give the team fresh impetus. "Enthusiasm, structure, chances - it was all there. In the end, we maybe lacked a bit of maturity both offensively and defensively. But we have to recognise Borussia Mönchengladbach's performance as well. They were the strongest team we've come up against in both games in terms of individual quality and intensity," said Gorges.

Under-17s: Wehrbein – Mirza, Ritter, Damberg (Riedl, 46), Adje (Najdi, 58) – Fahrenhorst, Duarte dos Santos, Faust (Kolano, 71) – Branco (Mize, 81), Kusi (König, 46), Zarqelain (Driedger, 46)
