Waldemar Anton signs until 2028

Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund have signed Waldemar Anton, 27, from VfB Stuttgart. The centre-back, who was part of the German national team squad for the European Championship and played in the last match against Spain in the quarter-finals, signed a contract today, Monday, which runs until 30 June 2028.

"I'm really looking forward to my first game at Signal Iduna Park, to seeing the fans, and to meeting my teammates. I hadn't planned to switch clubs – but then Borussia Dortmund came along. A top club that just made it to the Champions League final. This shows the potential that this club has. From the very beginning, everyone at BVB made me feel that they really wanted to sign me and that I could and should play an important role. I'm really looking forward to it," says the defender.

Anton (196 Bundesliga appearances; six goals, seven assists) received his footballing education at the youth academy of Hannover 96 and moved to Stuttgart in the summer of 2020, where he quickly became a key player. Last season, he played a major role in his team's surprising second-place finish, helped in no small part by having the second-best defensive record after champions Bayer Leverkusen. The defender made his international debut in March 2024 and has since played three more games for the national team. Anton will join up with the BVB squad at the end of July and travel to their training camp in Bad Ragaz, Switzerland.

"Waldemar Anton has developed into a top Bundesliga defender, both in terms of his sporting ability and his personality, and has recently led his club into the Champions League," says Borussia Dortmund's managing director for sport, Lars Ricken, adding: "This summer, Waldemar had first-class transfer options at both domestic and international level. We are delighted that, after intensive and positive discussions, he has decided in favour of Borussia Dortmund."

Borussia Dortmund's sporting director Sebastian Kehl stresses: "Waldemar is a first-class centre-back and a real boost for us. He is well versed tactically, robust, strong in the air and an absolute leader both on the pitch and in the dressing room. He is the type who can exert a positive influence on the team and always strives for the highest possible level of success. As an ambitious Germany international, he is a perfect fit for us, and we are delighted that we have been able to inspire him to join us on our journey."

In this interview, coach Jan Zimmermann looks back on the training camp. \n<\/p>\nHow satisfied are you with this year's training camp?<\/b> \n"Of course it's a shame that not all the players were able to be there, but it's our job to hand players over to Nuri's team when not all the internationals are back yet.. Nevertheless, we used the time to focus on giving the new players a lot of information this week: the way we want to play football and how we behave in the group. I'm very happy with that. The new players have integrated well, but they have also been well received by the older players. We have a very unified group that has not only worked hard on the pitch, but has also presented itself off the pitch in a way that I expect from my team, from a Borussia Dortmund team. My verdict is very positive and I am sure that we will continue to carry this momentum and positive energy with us."<\/p>\nThe small squad meant you were never able to play XI vs XI. Instead you focused on small and medium-sized playing areas with a lot of tackling. Was that a disadvantage for preseason? \n<\/b>"Playing XI versus XI isn't that important to me, we'll be playing XI versus XI every week from the start of the season at the beginning of August. It's about preparing ourselves as well as possible for that. And I think the forms of play and the training content that we were able to work on here will definitely help us. We've been able to take everyone here to the next level physically. That's the intensity we need for day-to-day business in the league."<\/p>\nThere were a few players who came to BVB from the Regionalliga.<\/b> How difficult was it to adapt?<\/b> \n"We have a good example in the team in Franz Roggow, who came to us from the Regionalliga and is now training with the first team. I see certain parallels with Felix Paschke. We know this approach works and that you simply have to give the boys two or three months and allow them to make the odd mistake or two. He shows his level again and again in training, he gives more than enough. It's not the first time I've said this: young players always need patience and time. The first few weeks are important for him to get a feel for the team, but also for my way of working. That's working well, he's already contributing a lot. However, he will of course take on many more tasks on and off the pitch." \n<\/p>\nLike last year, you once again decided to go white water rafting.<\/b> Why is a shared experience like that important for the group?<\/b> \n"Not only the boys, but also the coaching team and the staff had a lot of fun.
