Pre-Match Report
The facts on BVB's clash with Barca
The scenario: FC Barcelona won the first leg by a 4-0 scoreline. Borussia Dortmund will need to win by a four-goal margin in order to force extra-time. BVB have prevailed in seven of their 10 prior knockout ties with Spanish clubs, but they have never overcome a deficit of more than two goals from the first leg in their European history.
Home/away: The Black & Yellows have lost only one of their last 17 UEFA Champions League home games, registering 10 victories and six draws during that run. The goal ratio during that period stands at 34-10. They have only conceded goals in six of those 17 home matches. FC Barcelona are unbeaten in 15 consecutive away matches across all competitions (12 wins and three draws) since losing 1-0 in San Sebastian on 10 November 2024.
Flashback: The most recent meeting between the two clubs at the Strobalallee was only four months ago: Borussia Dortmund fell to a 3-2 (0-0) defeat on Matchday 6 of the league phase. BVB did not quite have enough to bring it back to level terms again in what was a spectacular second half. The 81,365 spectators at a sold-out SIGNAL IDUNA PARK saw BVB put up a great fight against the favourites, levelling through goals from Serhou Guirassy on two occasions (60/78). Raphinha (52) and Torres (75/85) scored the goals for Barcelona.
Borussia facts: BVB have progressed in eight of the 19 knockout ties in UEFA competitions in which they lost the first leg away from home, mostly recently against Atlético Madrid last season. The biggest deficit that they have overturned to date was a 2-0. In both cases in which Dortmund lost the first leg by a 3-0 scoreline – 2014 against Real Madrid and 2018 against Tottenham – they were eliminated. A 2-0 victory over the Madrid outfit in the return leg was not enough. The 5-0 win over Benfica in the European Cup on 4 December 1963 and the 4-0 triumph against AC Milan in the UEFA Cup semi-final on 4 April 2002 are the most glittering of the 14 European home wins achieved by a margin of four or more goals. There has never been a four-goal deficit after a first leg.
Barcelona facts: The five-time winners of the European Cup/UEFA Champions League have prevailed in 14 of their 21 knockout ties against German opposition. Overall, the Catalans have progressed to the next round in 38 of the 43 ties in which they won the first leg. They have won 38 of their 43 clashes in UEFA competitions when they were able to win the first leg at home. (br)
