Pre-Match Report

"You dream of games like this" – handballers face Sola in the Westfalenhalle

Borussia Dortmund's handball players have been waiting weeks for this match: On Saturday (22 February, 15:00 CET), the Black & Yellows will face Norwegian club Sola HK in the EHF European League in front of a unique backdrop in Dortmund's Westfalenhalle. Over 8,000 tickets have already been sold for the game. Tickets are available in the online ticket shop.

"This is and will be a great experience for all of us. When there are thousands of fans singing BVB songs - you dream of being able to experience games like this," says Henk Groener. This will be the second time that the BVB coach and his handball team have competed in the Westfalenhalle. The Dutchman and Lisa Antl, Dana Bleckmann, Lena Hausherr, Maraike Kusian, Emma Olsson and Haruno Sasaki from the current squad were in attendance at the record-breaking match in 2023, when over 11,000 fans turned out. Back then, the Black& Yellows defeated Hungarian club Siofok KC 26-23 to advance to the quarter-finals of the EHF European League.

"That was the biggest game of my career. I scored the first goal and the atmosphere was unbelievable. I'm really looking forward to experiencing it again in the Westfalenhalle,’" explained Emma Olsson in an interview ahead of the highlight occasion. For Olsson, it doesn't matter that BVB's final group game will no longer decide who advances to the quarter-finals: 'We want to give people something to show for their attendance and inspire them."

In addition, the BVB handball players still have something to make up for - in the reverse fixture, the Black & Yellows were narrowly beaten away from home by Norwegian club Sola HK: Henk Groener's team lost 33-20 after 60 minutes, having led by four goals at half-time (18-14). In the return leg on Saturday, the Borussia women want revenge for defeat in front of more than 10,000 members of the Black & Yellow faithful.

"That was certainly our weakest performance," said Henk Groener looking back to the game, adding: "We should have won that one." This is another reason why his players need "no motivation whatsoever" for Saturday's game: "I expect my team to play with passion and enthusiasm for 60 minutes. We have to soak it all up, allow things to happen and loosen up. Then we can say goodbye to the European League with a great experience and concentrate on the Final4," said Henk Groener with a view to the final round of the DHB-Pokal on the first weekend in March, when Borussia will face HB Ludwigsburg in the semi-final (1 March, 19:00 CET).

But first up on the programme is the highlight game in the Westfalenhalle, for which over 8,000 tickets have already been sold: Admission is from 13:30 CET on Saturday, tickets for the game are available in the online ticket shop. There will also be a ticket office open on the day of the game.
