"We want to dominate" – Two returnees to face Heidenheim

After the international matches, the Bundesliga will resume with the Matchday 3 action: Borussia Dortmund will welcome league leaders Heidenheim to SIGNAL IDUNA PARK on Friday evening (20:30 CEST).

It was Nuri Sahin's first international break since becoming the head coach of Borussia Dortmund, and the BVB boss only had five first-team players available. "It was indeed strange, I want to finally have the lads back together again," said Sahin, who is nonetheless satisfied with the last couple of weeks. In addition to Niklas Süle, Julian Brandt, Felix Nmecha, Serhou Guirassy and Yan Couto, the 36-year-old also had U23 players at his disposal. "I have to pay the boys a huge compliment, they kept the level extremely high in training."

Sahin is expecting the Black & Yellow internationals back on the pitch for the two sessions on Wednesday. But Gio Reyna, who sustained a muscular injury in a training session with the US national team, will not be among the training group. "That will unfortunately take a few weeks," explained Sahin when asked about Reyna's return. Nico Schlotterbeck, who is suspended following his red card for two bookable offences against Bremen, will also be unavailable for BVB. However, there is good news regarding Serhou Guirassy and Yan Couto. "Serhou is making an outstanding impression in training, I'm happy that he is involved again," said Sahin of Guirassy, who is set to make his debut for BVB against Heidenheim. Couto is also an option again, having been unable to link up with the Brazil national team due to knee problems. "He dealt with that in a very professional manner," explained Sahin, adding: "He had to do rehab here and has trained with us fully again this week."

Sahin will decide who makes the starting line-up on the Friday evening after the international break based on the final training session on Thursday. But one thing is for sure. "We need to be completely fresh to win against Heidenheim." Because while 15 Borussia players were in action for their national teams, Heidenheim coach Frank Schmidt, whose team currently top the standings following a 2-0 victory over promoted outfit St. Pauli and a 4-0 home win against Augsburg, had all his players together. "We didn't have that advantage," remarked Sahin. "But we do have the home advantage."

Sahin is aware that the game against Heidenheim, who are participating in the Europa Conference League following a strong season in 2023/24, will not be a foregone conclusion. "They have an experienced team that are not afraid of defending," said the BVB coach, who especially appreciates Heidenheim for their many facets. "In Paul Wanner, they have also signed a difference-maker who brings even more footballing class to their play." The new signing from FC Bayern Munich has already been involved in four goals in his first four competitive appearances for Heidenheim. "They know where their strengths lie – we know that we're prepared."

The goal for Sahin is clear: Borussia want to pick up their next three points on Friday evening, after the opening win against Frankfurt and the draw in Bremen. "We're playing at home at our place – we want to focus on ourselves, impose our game and dominate."
