Champions League: Real and Barcelona among opponents
This was the result of the draw held in Monaco early on Thursday evening. BVB will play against each of these opponents only once – there will be four home and four away games in total. It is an interesting mixture of high-quality and in some cases history-laden match-ups. Barcelona, Shakhtar, Celtic and Sturm Graz will travel to SIGNAL IDUNA PARK, while BVB must make the journey to Madrid, Bruges, Zagreb and Bologna.
The results will flow into one joint table involving all 36 participating clubs. The teams that end up in one of the top eight places after eight matchdays qualify directly for the knockout rounds, which kick off with the round of 16. Meanwhile, the European campaign will end at the end of January for the teams that finish in one of the bottom 12 places. The teams in positions 9 to 24 will contest the so-called "round of 16 play-offs" to determine the eight remaining participants in the round of 16. Neighbours in the table will form a pair. The only thing that will be left to determine is whether the ninth-placed team will face the club in 23rd or 24th place in the table (which then determines the opponent for the club in 10th place).
Borussia Dortmund were – like each of the 36 participants – assigned two opponents from each of the four pots in the draw. The sole purpose of the pots is to ensure that all participants have a balanced match schedule overall. UEFA will announce the fixture list on Saturday.
The advance sale for the first home game will take place on Wednesday 4 September: as usual, online from 12 noon CEST via the Borussia Dortmund club member ticket shop.
