Beier tastes victory, Gittens initiates late win

Six Borussia players were in action for their national teams on Friday evening. Maxi Beier and the Germany U21 national team qualified for the European Championships – thanks in part to a Beier goal – while Jamie Gittens initiated the late winning goal for England in the same youth category.

The Germany U21 national team will be taking part in the European Championships in Slovakia next year. The team qualified for the finals thanks to their 2-1 victory against Bulgaria early on Saturday evening. BVB attacking player Maxi Beier had a hand in the success, heading Germany into the lead in the ninth minute. Nick Woltemade then re-established the lead from the penalty spot after an equalising goal had been scored (66). With 25 points, the U21s have an unassailable lead at the top of Group D with one round of qualifying matches remaining.

The Germany senior national team managed to win their match against Bosnia & Herzegovina in Zenica 2-1. Pascal Groß made the starting line-up in central midfield and was replaced by his BVB team-mate Waldemar Anton in stoppage time. Nico Schlotterbeck was an unused substitute. The victory on Matchday 3 of the Nations League leaves Germany in first place in League A with seven points on the board.

Before the match, the Netherlands and Donyell Malen were still level on points with the Germany team in League A. But after their 1-1 draw with Hungary in Budapest, the Oranje have fallen behind for the time being with five points on the board. Malen came on with the score 1-0 to Hungary in the 77th minute of the match. Only six minutes later, the Netherlands scored a late equaliser through Denzel Dumfries.

The England U21 national team scored two late goals against Ukraine in Bournemouth. Manchester City player James McAtee's decisive goal in stoppage time was initiated by substitute Jamie Gittens, who broke free down the flank and crossed sharply into the middle. The ball ultimately found its way to McAtee, who kept ice-cool from several metres out. Gittens came on as a substitute in the 64th minute. Despite the late triumph for England, Ukraine remain in first place in EURO Qualification Group F with 24 points. England occupy second spot with 22 points and are therefore also well on their way to qualifying for the finals.
