Pre-Match Report
BVB Women Host SGS Essen for a Local Rivalry Match
The scenario
With a 5-0 away win at Vorwärts Spoho Cologne last Sunday, the BVB Women extended their perfect record as leaders of the Regionalliga West. After nine matchdays, the Black and Yellows have nine wins and 47 goals to their credit, while still having not conceded a single goal. “We were already up by three goals early on in Cologne and went on to create further scoring chances,” said Markus Högner in his post-match review. “In the second half, there was a roughly 15-minute spell of carelessness, which we were able to overcome after the substitutions and thanks to more goals.” According to Högner, the team will continue to benefit from the ability to bring in equally strong players off the bench as the season progresses.
Roster
For the match against SGS Essen U21, Coach Markus Högner has the same roster available as last week—which also means that Paula Reimann remains sidelined due to chronic Achilles tendon issues.
There was good news this week regarding Dana Marquardt: The forward has partially rejoined team training 351 days after her cruciate ligament tear. Markus Högner: “Dana was very happy to be back on the field with her teammates. Anyone who has been training alone or only in small groups for months longs for that sense of belonging. Now we hope she’ll quickly become a viable option again.”
Opponent
With just one win and seven goals scored so far this season, SGS Essen U21 still lacks the necessary firepower this season. Following the first women’s team’s relegation from the Bundesliga, the youth ranks of Sportgemeinschaft Essen-Schönebeck also underwent a restructuring over the summer. Several youth players are now competing for the team in the Women’s 2nd Bundesliga.
Nevertheless, Markus Högner expects a challenging task in the upcoming home game: “We’re facing an extremely young team that’s already performing very well for its age. Video analysis made it clear that the team primarily pursues a possession-based style of play. I’m certain that Coach Daniel Balk’s squad will take another step forward as the season progresses.”
Essen’s Past
Matches against the local rivals are always special for Markus Högner, as he served as head coach of the SGS women’s Bundesliga team from 2010 to 2016 and from 2019 to 2025: “I’m naturally very familiar with the environment, and I still know some of the players who trained with the first team as young prospects back when I was there.” Annika Enderle, Jacqueline Meißner, Lena Ostermeier, and Ramona Maier will also have a few reunions due to their past in Essen. According to the coach, however, the focus is entirely on securing the next three points.
